Heh. Technically, those Go Nagai shows were from the 70s anyway. Grendizer was terribly popular in the french speaking world back in the day and is still fondly remembered. (being known as Goldorak there) And while most french speaking people will regognize him, very few are actually familiar with the two Mazingers that came before.
Being a bilingual french canadian, however, I'm lucky to be familiar with both "Goldorak" and "Tranzor Z".
And man, I really enjoy these thematic months of yours.
70's eh? That explains the poor animation quality. Giant robots are fun to draw, so I'm sure I'll get around to Grendizer and Getter Robo and the like... maybe I'll do a month of 70's anime sometime. I actually DO like that 70's look with a modern coat of paint on it.
Yeah, me too. I'm an old school anime fan, really... Been into the stuff from the 70s to the late 90. There was some sort of cheese in it that made it awesome... And that's something most of the recent stuff just doesn't have. (except for Gurren Lagann, which was really old school with a modern coat of paint on it, like you said.)
not ripping on new anime, though. I hate to admit it, but I enjoy a good moeblob anime from time to time. But there is something to the old styles too. Kind of like appreciating a brand new Lamborghini, but still seeing the beauty in an old 70's Dodge Charger.
Yeah. That show is pure fluff... I would not recommend it to anyone who is not already into moeblobs to begin with. But I did like it... (haven't bought it yet, because Bandai was genius enough to release them in multi-volumes)
No, True Mazinger hasn't been licensed yet. Not sure that it will be at this point. Too bad, I would totally buy it. But fansubs are out there. SKL is way different and only has a fleeting connection to any previous version of Mazinger. It stands alone as its own thing. Still pretty cool though. I really liked the Mazinkaiser OVA. The line art really had that retro charm. There is also another OVA sequel movie, Mazinkaiser vs The Dark General (or something along those lines) which also hasn't been licensed. If you like that animation style, Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo, another Go Nagai giant robot OVA based on a classic, is very similar. Alas, that's also only available via fansubs.
Nope. I ordered the Mazinkaiser OVA and Mazinkaiser SKL, though... even though I'm not sure I like the new character designs in SKL. I love the old character designs done in new animation quality in Mazinkaiser OVA.
