Feb Draw a Day 11 by will-Ruzicka Feb Draw a Day 11 by will-Ruzicka
So I put on Robotech while I was working on my storyboad revisions today, and I thought this would be a fun scene to draw. I'll probably jump ahead to the later sagas and draw some of those motorcycle robots, too. But the Macross stuff is what I remember most, simply because I went on to really enjoy Macross in general.

I've, Uh...never actually seen Robotech. I've seen one or two of the Macross films, but, in my defense, I've always been somewhat confused by what is what, what came first, and so on. I recall Robotech when it first came on American TV, but I was so engrossed by other shows at the time that it just kind of passed me by. It, without question, is one of those shows that is on my "To Watch" list, I guess I've just always been afraid (considering how amazing the art and voice acting of modern Anime is) that Robotech would just seem, at this point, so dated it would be impossible for me to enjoy it as everyone else has.
:ashamed:

That said, the above art is awesome. The sense of momentum it has is pretty amazing.

I definitely prefer now, the original Macross. Hulu has Macross up, with an English dub (I'd prefer the japanese)... and where the animation definitely shows its age in comparison with stuff from today, the story is really interesting. I'm having a hard time tracking down the series for a decent price... so I might just put up with the dub (which is only Okay... nothing great)

It's sad but it never occurred to me to check one obvious place. Netflix. I have a sub for the basic service and it turns out they have Robotech. What's better they have the Uncut Released "Macross Saga" version. So, guess what I'll be watching over the next few days? Already went through episode one and, yeah, while the animation is...(*cringes*)as you mentioned the English Dub (I prefer dubs when they're good. I want to watch the story, not read it) isn't actually all that bad. Yet another reason I'm thankful for the art you did, I might not have ever thought to look for Robotech in the first place.
=D

Yeah, that's what I was watching when I drew this... I didn't know it was uncut in any way until I saw Minmei's butt.

Ha! Someone actually mentioned that in the reviews. I guess that scene in your art happens in the second episode? Can't wait for that, "Oh! There it is," Moment. (Chuckle) I'm such a geek...

I love your draw-a-day's. They turn out so great. I would like to suggest a femme-fatale for a future draw: The Wasp from the Avengers. :P Keep them coming!!

I am planning to go back to drawing super heroes once February's draw a day is done... but I have more femme fatales I want to draw than the guys... -_-;;

I'll add her to the list, though.

Hell yeah!!! :headbang: It was very well written and animated. Did you know Bryan Cranston did the voice for Macross Plus? He did. :)

You know, as much as I prefer the original now to Robotech, they did do a pretty good job with the re-writing. I get irritated by the narrator having to explain to us what people are feeling, though.
I did not know that was him in Macross Plus... though I went back just now on Hulu and sure enough... Apparently he's done a lot of voice work I never knew of.

:lmao: I forgot that people can be as old ass me on Deviant Art. I'm in my 30s as well.

When I said well written I meant the ones now, because, now, no one rewrites anime like when we were kids, but yeah, seeing it again when Toonami played it again in the late 90s early 2000s I didn't feel like, "Oh this bad", it was different, but still good, much like the rewrite of Project A-ko. (one of the first Laserdisk I ever seen!)

I know! I had no idea Bryan Cranston was that voice, I must have seen the movie a dozen times when I was a teen! That's what influenced my art (Macross Plus) and Tank Police.

Thanks for responding dude, most people that are famous in this industry don't have anytime for anyone, you might say "I'm not famous" but I know who you are. You did story boards on some pretty big things, and are a good artist in your own right!

Heh... Well, I still don't FEEL famous in any way. I like responding to people... even if all I have to respond is "thanks".

Oh, and Tank Police was awesome. I still think those are some of the coolest Sci Fi tank designs.

I'll have to look it up.

It's okay I can do it. Okay here's the original [link] Dominion Tank Police
and here was the other one [link] New Dominion Tank Police

The switch from film to digital has really hit anime hard! Anime went from very stylized well shaded work to, barely shaded simple pictures. I think the two tank police movies really, really show this.

it's true there was a certain quality to animation on film versus digital, and some of the early digital affairs were pretty bad. But I think there's some real nice stuff being made today. It's all dependent on the size of budget and the skill of the crew.

thanks for the info!

I don't really remember what Southern Cross was known for... Mospeada had the bike mechs, right? I'll probably just skip ahead on Netflix... it'd be good to hit up all three Robotech sagas from the 80's.

Also, if you're gonna be watching Macross/Robotech, do yourself a favor and pick up Macross:Do You Remember Love -- it's the original macross as a movie instead -- the animation is topnotch

That's one of the first true anime I'd ever seen. This guy my brother knew loaned me a bootleg VHS when he heard I used to watch Robotech. And is apparently a much more reasonably priced DVD on Amazon... tracking down the original Macross series in Japanese appears to be a pricey Endeavour.

I assumed it was a blonde girl judging from the graphic Netflix had up... I don't really remember that part of the series from when I was a kid though. I might have been watching something else. I hate to admit, but the stories were a little over my head at the time... I mainly watched for the ship to ship fights.
